IoT Monitoring for Forest Change & Growth
Challenge
Forests are often located in remote areas, making traditional monitoring methods inefficient and costly. Managing forests as large uniform blocks can lead to missed environmental changes, and a lack of early warning systems makes it difficult to respond to threats like deforestation or climate impact.
Solution
A LoRaWAN®-based automated monitoring system that provides real-time insights on forest dynamics, environmental changes, and biological processes, ensuring early detection of changes for improved conservation and management.
Deployment
A UG67 Outdoor Gateway is mounted at an elevated location to provide up to 11km LoRaWAN® coverage, supporting 2,000+ sensor nodes. The system receives and transmits environmental data using high-gain glass fibre antennas. Various LoRaWAN® sensors are attached to trees and soil to track forest growth, climate variations, and ecosystem shifts. The collected data is analysed in the cloud for research and decision-making.
